The piano is the most difficult instrument to record.  The dynamics of a 9 foot concert grand are hard to comprehend.  Every aspect of recording a grand piano is important.  The type and number of microphones; placement and distance from the strings; lid position; equalization; compression characteristics; interface trim; effects and room acoustics.

Composition Studios utilizes a 5 microphone placement approach.  This encompasses 2 condenser shotgun mics on the strings, one 15 foot high overhead large diaphragm, one rear case large diaphragm and a vibration contact microphone on the soundboard.  Placement is critical to avoid any phasing issues, which is where most engineers encounter problems.
